A crime was still committed

It's been a while since my last posting. How ya'll been? Not too bad here. There has been so much going on lately that I tell myself "ooh I'm gonna blog about that" but I never do. I think I get on "topic overload" and it is sometimes hard to focus all of my brilliant thoughts into simple sentences that mere mortals can readily understand. This is how I can empathize with Rosie O'Donnell.

Anyway, I would like to way in on the whole Duke Lacrosse rape, deal, fiasco. Today prosecutors dropped all charges against the three players. Yeah, this is good news. These 3 young men now can go on and live a normal life afforded them after graduation. But sadly this will not be the case. I think the most tragic thing about this case not being wrongly accused. It is the tarnishing of a name. There are 2 things on this Earth that give us our identity. Our face and our name. We try hard as humans to protect these. Why do criminals hide their faces? Why is there shame in seeing names in the police report? Because these things make indelible marks on how we are identified. These 3 men’s faces and names have been paraded on the media's stage for the sake of voyeurism, racism, ratings and the ego of Mike Nifong. I don't feel much consideration was given to how this would affect the alleged. I pity these 3 men because they are the real victims. But it is hard to arrest somebody for merely bringing shame to your name. The notion of "in 10 years nobody will even remember this incident" feels good to sooth our conscience but it will be carried for the rest of the lacrosse players lives. Yes, a crime has been committed. Sadly, it will probably go unpunished. Not the rape of a woman, but the desecration of a name.
